Get to the point

A group of post-it notes on a black background. The centre note says “I want more people to donate blood. My point.” The others contain text supporting that point, including an opening and a call to action.

One of the kindest things you can do for an audience is to Get To The Point.

You’ve probably noticed that people’s attention spans seem to get getting shorter so ask yourself this:

“If a fire alarm emptied the room, what would I wish I’d told them?”

Put that up front.

Try this:

When you’re putting a speech or presentation together, start by writing your point in the middle of a page.  You should be able to say it in one or two sentences.  Everything you say, should be related back to that point.

(Have a look at the example above, where I’ve used post-it notes.)

As a bonus, knowing your point and sticking to it stops you waffling because you know when you’ve come to the end of your point.  Lots of my clients worry about how to stop and this works brilliantly for them.

If this brings up questions, ask away.
