Emotional and Stress-Eating

Drink water, but…

A young woman looking directly at the camera drinks water from a glass.

Drinking water is an excellent idea and it’s often something you can use as a habit interruption strategy when you’re tempted to eat in reaction to emotions or stress. The time you take to pour yourself a glass and drink it can sometimes be enough to give you space between something happening and you reacting using food.

There is something to bear in mind though. Different parts of your digestive system have different roles and it’s the stomach’s role to start breaking down your food mechanically and chemically. For best digestion, your stomach environment needs to be strongly acidic.

Too much water can upset that acidity. If you can, give yourself about 20 minutes before and after a meal without water to help your stomach.

Other than that, drink up.
