Emotional and Stress-Eating

Get ready for more change

In this blog, I posted about starting change in your brain little by little. The same applies to your body: small changes can ease you into bigger changes.

Here are a couple of straightforward things to try:

1.     Where are your shoulders?
(Arrgghh! I can hear my father’s best dad joke voice saying “right on the end of my arms where I left them”.)

Seriously though, if you’re stressed, I would take a bet that your shoulders are closer to your ears than they should be. As we tense up, our shoulders tend to ascend.

Notice where your shoulders are and see if you can lower them and roll them back. You might be surprised how much you can relax your shoulders as well as the top of your back at the base of your neck. See if you can do that 4-5 times a day.

2.     Where are your eyes?
Many people spend a significant part of the day looking at screens: same angle, same distance from your eyes.

Every 20 minutes or so, move so you’re looking at something much further away. Before you look back at your screen, close your eyes and take a deep breath and a long exhale. Give your eyes a rest.

Ease your body into change.
