Set your brain to positive or neutral

A stone sits on a wooden surface. On it is written ‘SMILE’.

Our brains are programmed to notice threats. It’s not surprising because it’s your brain’s job to keep you safe. However, if you’re constantly on guard, you’ll get exhausted more easily and, when your defences are down, it’s easy to find yourself elbow-deep in a bag of chips.

Here’s something to try: notice when good things happen.
But don’t stop there; notice when neutral things happen too.

If you’re used to anticipating difficult things, collect some data on how often those things actually happen – and DON’T happen. Your brain is programmed to register the former but not the latter.

Having data can help you calm your brain when it’s expecting the worst.

Notice when you’re safe.
