Call it whatever works – movement

Whenever a ‘starting date’ looms – New Year’s Day, your birthday, Monday – many people jump on the exercise bandwagon, and often last only a short time. To do better, think about what having an exercise goal does for you.
If you love it, get stuck in. All power to you.
If the word ‘exercise’ feels like too much pressure, investigate what it would feel like to use the word ‘movement’ instead. Does it feel more like something that is easier to get on board with?
Our bodies are made to move. It keeps our joints lubricated, it moves our lymph around and it strengthens our muscles – to name just a few things it does. There are many, many more.
Movement doesn’t have to be full-on. It could be a regular walk. It could be taking the stairs. It could be standing up and sitting down half a dozen times while you’re watching a TV or a movie (probably not at the theatre, right?). It could be a backyard game of cricket or croquet, or piggybacking your nieces or nephews.
Just look for opportunities to move. Your body will thank you for it. So will your nervous system.
