Public Speaking

Take every opportunity

A woman in a red jacket and sunglasses with a bag over her shoulder faces the camera and holds out a microphone to two bay horses in a paddock behind a waist-high gate.

In the late 2000’s, I made a friend at the local wildlife sanctuary.  We used to count kākā at 5:30am as part of a programme to boost their numbers here in Wellington.  Turns out she worked at a radio station.

Over the years, I’ve done some random things she thought would be interesting on air.  Every time she asked, I said yes.  I talked about rugby, geology, jigsaw puzzle racing… whatever.  They were all excellent opportunities to practise public speaking in odd situations.  On the Chatham Islands, I even carried around her sound gear.  It was like wrestling with an octopus!

If someone offers you a public speaking opportunity, say yes.

Listen to the ones I did below.

Are they perfect?  Nope.

Were they fun?  Definitely.

Did they stretch me and make my public speaking better?  Absolutely!
